Alpha Gamma Sigma

History:

Alpha Gamma Sigma was first founded at Western Illinois University on April 3, 1971.  The Fraternity residence is located at 233 North Sherman Ave in Macomb.  The inspiration for the Fraternity originated from the founder’s desire for an organization that closely matched the values, morals, and virtues which each member had acquired through their upbringing in the agricultural community.  Even from day one, Alpha Gamma Sigma has had a long standing tradition for taking members and forming them into outstanding men, ready to face future challenges.

What Is AGS like?:

At AGS, we pride ourselves to being hard working and devoted gentlemen.  Generally, we are very close and a lively group that enjoys a wide range of activities, sports, and events throughout the semester.  We constantly receive compliments from other fraternities and sororities, as well as the community and university, on our overall quality and performance.  Most of the members at AGS have agricultural majors, however some major in fields such as chemistry, construction management, and law enforcement.  Alpha Gamma Sigma is an organization that offers friendship and personal development while making college life a successful and memorable experience.

What Are Some Things AGS Does?:

Alpha Gamma Sigma is a social fraternity, so we do many events both internally and externally throughout the year with multiple organizations.  Outside the fraternity, we are heavily involved with Homecoming, Greek Week competitions, intramural sports, and Ag Mech club, as well as hosting several social events with sororities each semester.  The fraternity itself hosts 2 main events each year including ‘Ags for Bags’ and our Golf Outing.  Ags for Bags is an annual Bags tournament as well as a turkey testicle eating contest.  As is appropriate, the proceeds go to the Gilda’s Club, supporting testicular cancer research and funding.  Our annual spring Golf Outing is held at the WIU Harry Mussato Golf Course in Macomb and is followed by the AGS Spring Bash.  This is our larger fundraiser and contributes to the Farm Safety for Just Kids program directly in Macomb.

Performance:

Alpha Gamma Sigma proudly topped the list for academics throughout the ENTIRE Greek community last semester with a towering3.154 GPA.  (WIU Average = 2.891)  With our new scholarship approach members are actively working together to make sure each member obtains the best grades possible, especially new members.  AGS grades increased almost 10% in the last year, and over 25% from 4 semesters ago.   We work to ensure that not only will the individual succeed, the fraternity will succeed.

Overall:

Being an Alpha Gamma Sigma member is an exciting experience that contributes to better social interaction throughout the campus and community.  Many past members refer to the Fraternity as “the best decision I’ve ever made” as they gained friendship, trust, and leadership skills that they use every day.  Not only does Alpha Gamma Sigma help students through college, we have fun doing it.
